Buy an Air Bike – Full-Body Cardio for Home Gyms & Studios

Air Bikes – your pace determines the intensity

An Air Bike combines the pedaling motion of the legs with the alternating pushing and pulling of movable arm levers. The resistance is generated by an air rotor. The faster you drive it, the higher the resistance becomes. This allows you to control the intensity through your effort and switch between steady endurance phases and intense intervals without manually setting a resistance level. For HIIT, warming up and full-body cardio, an Air Bike offers versatile training options. The console helps you structure your work phases and breaks and track your workouts using the available training metrics. Which programs, displays, and connectivity options you can use depends on the specific model.

At motion sports, you will find Air Bikes from ATX, Assault Fitness, Schwinn and Vision Fitness for your home gym or studio. Compare the drive system, seat adjustment, console features, and maximum user weight to choose the right model. Also consider where you will place it -  The air noise increases with intensity – even with a quiet belt drive.

What should you look for when buying an air bike?

A suitable air bike can be adjusted to your body dimensions, remains stable even during intense intervals, and offers the features you actually use in your training. Since all models in this category use air resistance, the key differences lie primarily in ergonomics, drive, console, and equipment. These six purchasing criteria will help you make your selection.

Suitable for your height

Seat Adjustment & Handle Accessibility

Pay attention to horizontal and vertical seat adjustment. The seat height affects your leg position while pedaling. The forward and backward position also changes how you reach the moving arm levers. A proper adjustment should allow you to pedal, push, and pull in a controlled manner throughout the entire movement, without constantly sliding forward on the seat.

Especially for very small or large body sizes, the statement "adjustable seat" is not sufficient. What matters are the actual adjustment range and the reach to the handles. If multiple people use the machine, clearly visible markings and easy-to-use adjustments make switching easier. Different handle positions can offer additional options, but they are no substitute for a proper seating position.

Make an informed comparison of propulsion systems

Belts, chains & maintenance effort

Distinguish between the resistance system and the drive system. The air rotor generates the training resistance. A chain, belt, or a combination of both transfers your movement to this rotor. A belt drive requires no chain lubrication; with a chain drive, regular maintenance and tension checks may be required depending on the manufacturer.

Therefore, compare the specific maintenance requirements and the accessibility of the wear parts. Even an air bike with a belt drive is not completely maintenance-free. Screw connections, pedals, and moving joints still require checks. For frequently used equipment, the availability of spare parts and accessible service are also important.

Easily control intervals

Console, Training Programs & Operation

Consider how you mainly use your air bike. For a quick warm-up, clear basic displays are often sufficient. For regular interval training, it is crucial whether you can properly set the exercise time, rest time, and number of rounds. Check whether the console only offers preset programs or also allows you to create your own intervals.

Pay attention to easy-to-read displays and easily accessible buttons that you can operate even during a strenuous workout. Compare the actually available metrics such as time, cadence, watts, or distance. Also check the console's power supply. Even a mechanically driven air bike may still require batteries or a power adapter for its display.

Distinguishing between heart rate measurement and apps

Heart Rate Measurement & Connectivity

If you want to see your heart rate on the console, the heart rate monitor and receiver must support the same transmission method. Depending on the model, Bluetooth, ANT+, or certain 5 kHz systems may be supported. An existing heart rate monitor is therefore not necessarily compatible with every Air Bike.

Also distinguish between receiving heart rate data and transmitting training data to an app. Bluetooth support alone does not guarantee a connection to your preferred training app or the transmission of all displayed data. Check the explicitly supported applications and features, as well as the package contents. A compatible heart rate monitor may need to be purchased separately.

Stable during your workout

User weight, stability & intended use

The maximum user weight must accommodate everyone who uses the Air Bike. However, this is not a complete statement on suitability for frequent sprints or daily gym use. For commercial use, the manufacturer's approval and the applicable warranty and service conditions also apply.

For a stable setup, the frame construction, support feet and a level surface are crucial. Adjustable feet help compensate for minor floor unevenness. A higher machine weight can help keep it stable, but makes moving it more difficult. Therefore, also check whether transport casters and an easily accessible transport handle are provided.

To suit your installation location

Space requirements, noise & airflow

In addition to the equipment dimensions, also plan for the range of motion of the arm levers and sufficient space to get on and off . You can find the required clearances in the respective manual. When positioning the equipment, also consider the transport route. Doors, stairs, and narrow passages can be crucial with a heavy air bike.

The air rotor produces an air noise that increases with training intensity. A smooth-running belt drive does not, therefore, make the entire machine silent. For an apartment or shared spaces, you should consider both the air noise and any potential transmission of vibrations through the floor. A wind guard can reduce the direct airflow to the body. Check whether it is included or available as suitable accessories.

Understanding Air Bikes: How They Work, Equipment Comparison, and Training

An Air Bike combines leg work with active upper body engagement. But how does it differ from a stationary exercise bike, what do the console values mean, and how can it be used effectively? Here you will learn what makes the design of this equipment unique and how to properly understand its capabilities.

Air Bike, stationary exercise bike or indoor cycle: Which one is right for you?

The crucial question is what kind of exercise you are looking for and how you want to control your exertion. An Air Bike with moving arm levers engages the upper and lower body together. A classic stationary exercise bike or indoor cycle focuses primarily on leg work. An Air Bike is suitable if you want to combine pedaling, pushing, and pulling, and change the intensity immediately through your own effort. You can ride at a steady pace or alternate between easy and strenuous sections. The models offered here do not feature a fixed resistance level independent of speed.

A stationary exercise bike with electronic wattage control is interesting if you want to set a specific power output. Within its control range, it adjusts the braking resistance to your cadence. If you pedal slower, it increases the resistance; if you pedal faster, it reduces it. This is what distinguishes this feature from a simple wattage display on the Air Bike.

An indoor cycle offers a riding position and movement that are more closely oriented toward sport cycling. Depending on the model, you adjust the braking resistance manually or electronically. This concept is right for you if you primarily want to perform bike-like workouts and specifically combine cadence and resistance.

Air resistance - Why small changes in speed can make a big difference

On the Air Bike, you move a rotor against air resistance. As the rotor speed increases, the resistance rises. A small increase in cadence can therefore require significantly more effort than you initially expect. The exertion does not change like it does with a fixed weight level. When getting started, it is worth finding a steady rhythm first. Accelerate gradually and observe how your breathing and the displayed power change. This way, you will learn which pace you can maintain for several minutes and which is only suitable for short sections.

Which muscles are worked on the Air Bike?

When pedaling, the thighs and glutes are primarily worked, while pushing and pulling on the arm levers engage the chest, back, shoulders, and arms. The core muscles help stabilize your position on the saddle. How much individual areas are challenged also depends on how you distribute the work between your arms and legs. If you only push and pull lightly along, the legs take on a larger share. If you use the arm levers more actively, you engage the upper body more. However, a fixed distribution of exertion cannot be derived from this. The arms and legs work together on the same drive system.

This makes the Air Bike a versatile piece of equipment for endurance and muscular endurance. For targeted muscle building and maximum strength, a separate strength training remains useful, where you can systematically increase movements, weights, and repetitions.

Steady endurance or intervals

For a steady endurance workout, choose a pace that you can maintain under control for the planned duration. During a deliberately easy workout, you should still be able to speak in full sentences. If the exertion increases significantly during the workout, slow down a bit instead of trying to maintain a wattage level you have already reached. During interval training, you alternate between higher exertion and recovery. To do this, you determine three things before starting. The duration of the exertion phase, the duration of the break, and the number of repetitions. Not every interval has to be a maximal sprint.

Correctly understanding wattage, calories, and distance

The displays on your console help you structure your workouts. However, they answer different questions:

  • Time shows how long you have been training or how much of a set section remains.
  • Cadence or RPM describes the pedal revolutions per minute and helps you maintain a steady rhythm.
  • Wattage, if displayed, describes the mechanical power calculated by the equipment.
  • Calories are the console's calculated estimate of energy expenditure and not an individual metabolic measurement.
  • Distance is a training value calculated by the equipment and not a directly comparable distance on a bicycle outdoors.

For tracking your progress, comparisons on the same equipment under similar conditions are the most meaningful. Do not transfer calorie, distance, or wattage goals between different Air Bike models without checking. The design and calculation of the displays may differ from one another.

Combining the Air Bike and strength training effectively

As a general warm-up, you can easily use the Air Bike and gradually increase the pace. The goal is to go into the following workout prepared. For heavy squats, bench press or other strength exercises, appropriate warm-up sets for the respective movement should still follow. If your focus is on strength performance and proper technique, plan strenuous Air Bike intervals rather after strength training or in a separate session. An exhausting sprint block before heavy working sets can lead to you no longer performing them with the planned quality.

In a circuit, the combination with the other exercises also counts. In addition to the legs, the Air Bike also works the arms and upper body. After pull-ups or push-ups, the same bike section can therefore feel different than in a rested state. For performance comparisons, keep the exercise order and break times as consistent as possible.

Only arms or only legs: What to consider

On appropriately equipped models, you can focus on the upper body by placing your feet on the provided footrests and driving the rotor via the arm levers. For this, use exclusively the position provided by the manufacturer. Pay attention to the mechanical coupling - the pedals and arm levers can continue to move together, even if you are only actively driving one area. "Only arms" therefore does not automatically mean that the pedals stand still. The same applies to the arm levers during leg-focused training.

Reduce the pace before changing positions and follow the instructions for the respective model. A footrest or a movable handle is not an arbitrary entry or exit point during an ongoing sprint.

All you need to know.

Frequently Asked Questions about Air Bikes.

Yes, an air bike can also be used at low intensity. You don't have to sprint or reach a predetermined power level. The important thing is that you can move the pedals and arm levers in a controlled manner from a suitable seated position. Start at a relaxed pace and first get used to the coordinated movement. A large number of training programs is not necessary for this.

An air bike is not a silent exercise machine. The sound of the fan is particularly noticeable at high speeds. In addition, there are model-dependent drive noises and possible vibrations that can be transmitted through the floor. A suitable mat can protect the floor and affect the transmission of vibrations, but it will not eliminate the fan noise. If you want to exercise directly next to bedrooms or workspaces, you should test the noise level beforehand at a comparable intensity.

This depends on the permissible environmental conditions of the respective model. A covered parking space is not automatically suitable. Moisture, condensation, dust, and extreme temperature fluctuations can affect metal parts, bearings, and electronics. For a garage, the specifications for temperature and humidity are therefore crucial. Unless expressly approved, you should keep the Air Bike in a dry indoor area. A cover does not make it suitable for outdoor use.

Not every smartwatch can send its heart rate to a fitness device. It must have a corresponding transmission function, and the console must support the protocol used. Bluetooth alone does not guarantee compatibility. Also distinguish between displaying your heart rate on the console and transferring the entire workout to your watch. Check both functions using the specific device names.

First, check whether the heart rate monitor and the console support the same transmission method. Then check the battery, the fit of the strap, and the contact between the electrodes and your skin according to the manufacturer's instructions. Some systems require manual pairing, while others receive the signal automatically. With Bluetooth, an existing connection to another device may also be relevant. If the display remains blank, the exact model of the heart rate monitor and the console model will help with troubleshooting.

This is model-dependent. For the saddle, the mounting and adjustment mechanism must be compatible. For the pedals, the thread and clearance are crucial, among other factors. An accessory for a conventional bicycle is therefore not automatically suitable. Check compatibility and manufacturer approval before replacing it. This is especially important for clipless pedals. With a coupled Air Bike drive, the pedals may continue to move even when you are no longer actively pedaling.

A wind shield is an optional comfort accessory, unless it is already included in the delivery. It can be useful if you find the direct airflow onto your body uncomfortable. However, it does not make the device silent and is not used to adjust the training resistance. Use only a version suitable for your model. You should not cover the rotor grille with towels or homemade covers.

Air bike refers to the type of machine, while Assault Fitness is a manufacturer. An Assault Bike is therefore an air bike, but not every air bike is made by Assault Fitness. ATX, Schwinn and Vision Fitness also offer models with air resistance and moving arm levers. Therefore, compare the specific features. Even within a single brand, the drive system, console and adjustment options can vary.

How will my Air Bike be delivered?

You can find the delivery time, shipping method, and scope of delivery on the respective product page. Depending on the model, the Air Bike may be delivered partially assembled or disassembled. Before ordering, check the transport route to the installation site. Packaging dimensions, equipment weight, door widths, and stairs are crucial factors. Also clarify the agreed delivery location. Transport into your training room is not automatically included.

What do I need to consider when assembling and positioning it?

Assemble your Air Bike according to the model-specific assembly instructions. Pay particular attention to the designation of the left and right pedals, the specified assembly direction, and the tightening torques for the screw connections. If necessary, arrange for a second person to help with heavy components. Place the device on a level, load-bearing surface and level out minor unevenness using the adjustable feet provided. Maintain the clearances specified in the instructions. Before first use, check that all connections are securely tightened, the seat is locked in place, and the pedals and arm levers have an unobstructed range of motion.

How do I clean and maintain my Air Bike?

Remove sweat after exercising with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then wipe the surfaces dry. Do not spray cleaning products directly onto the console, bearing areas, or drive system. Keep the fan guard free of dust and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Regularly check the pedals, screw connections, seat clamp, and moving joints. Maintain and retension the chain or belt according to the respective instructions. A belt drive does not require chain lubrication, but it is not completely maintenance-free. If you notice unusual noises, play, or uneven operation, stop exercising and have the cause investigated.
